Safety Abroad - General tips
-
Leave jewellery and valuables at home where they are safe.
Although jewels look nice on a night out, you could making yourself
a target for a mugging. Precious items are not easily replaced,
and often the insurance money is no consolation.
-
Travel with as little cash as possible, using travellers cheques
and credit cards instead. Try not to carry cards or anything
of monetary value in a backpack or pocket. These items are much
safer kept in a money belt.
-
Leave all unnecessary credit cards at home. Record the numbers
of the credit cards that you do bring, and keep the list separately
from the cards. You should immediately report the loss or theft
of your credit cards or traveler's checks to the credit card
companies and to the local police.
-
You should respect the laws and way of life in the country
you are visiting, in some countries religion, politics and culture
are very sensitive issues; avoid criticizing or commenting on
them. Always be courteous to security staff and police.
-
In the event of the loss or theft of your passport
while you are out of the UK, contact the nearest British Consulate
or Embassy who will be able to advise you.
-
It is wise not to carry large amounts of cash. You should take
most of your money in traveler's checks and remember to record
the serial numbers, denomination and the date and location of
the issuing bank or agency. Keep this information in a safe
and separate place so, if you lose your traveler's checks, you
can quickly get replacements.
